Duke Asidere

Duke Asidere is a trailblazer of contemporary African art, with a career spanning nearly 30 years. Through his provocative and unrestrained "rockstar" art style, Asidere delivers a bold critique of Nigerian society, addressing socio-cultural and socio-economic issues with fearless candor. His work sheds light on systemic, political, and personal challenges faced by Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, without concern for backlash or rebuttal.

Asidere’s unwavering belief in freedom of expression and art’s potential as a tool for political change positions him as a critical voice in the contemporary zeitgeist. He embraces the artist’s responsibility to advocate for truth, give a voice to the voiceless, and inspire a better world. Yet, his thematic scope extends beyond sociopolitical commentary, often celebrating the strength, wisdom, and beauty of African women. Inspired by his mother, who managed the household while his father worked as a sailor for the Elder Dempster company, Asidere portrays women in traditional attire as symbols of resilience and cultural pride.

In his painting Passages, Asidere presents a woman adorned in traditional Yoruba attire: Iro and Buba, complemented by a Gele (head tie), hand coverings, and dark shoes. The artwork pays homage to a woman exuding grace and cultural pride. Her relaxed yet composed posture reflects the inner strength and quiet contemplation characteristic of African women. Asidere’s signature expressive brushstrokes and abstract detailing imbue the piece with emotional depth, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary artistry. Passages captures both the external elegance and the inner complexity of its subject, making it a poignant reflection on identity and grace.

Born in Lagos in 1961, Duke Asidere received his undergraduate and postgraduate education at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. His work continues to resonate as a powerful voice in contemporary African art, offering a blend of advocacy, cultural celebration, and artistic innovation.
